Preparing for Your New Pawzilla Maine Coon Kitten
The first week with your new kitten can feel exciting, emotional, and even a little confusing. Knowing what to expect — and preparing in advance — helps your new family member settle in smoothly and keeps you confident through the adjustment period. Below you will find our kitten preparation guide.
🏠 Setting Up Your Home
#1 Order Your Essentials
Quick shopping checklist:
Travel carrier
Airtag collar
Food and water dishes
Bedding or cat tree
Toys & scratching post
#2 Housing & Safety
Must Dos:
Keep doors and windows secure — kittens are curious explorers.
Confine your kitten to one room for the first few days.
Consider a catio or enclosed outdoor area later on.
Always use a snug-fitting harness if taking your kitten outside.
- If you have house plants, check to make sure they are not poisonous to cats.
Pick up small items like rubber bands, hair ties, coins, or jewelry that could be swallowed.
Hide electrical cords and secure blinds or curtain strings
#3 Sleeping Arrangements
- Choose a quiet “safe zone” for bedtime and alone time.
- Use cozy bedding and avoid toxic plants or pesticides nearby.
••Think toddler-proofing — kittens will chew, climb, and explore everything.
🍽️ Food & Litter
#4 Feed, Water & Treats
- We feed Merrick and Wellness (a small starter bag is included).
- Transition slowly if you change foods — fast switches can cause tummy upset.
- Offer bottled or filtered water.
••Wait on treats until your kitten is fully eating and comfortable.
#5 Litter Box Training
- Start in a small space until your kitten learns the layout.
- Keep food, water, and litter close together at first.
- Avoid automatic litter boxes until your kitten reaches 5 lbs.
••Try unscented litter for easier transition.
💊 Health & Grooming
#6 Vet & Insurance
- Schedule your first vet exam within 5 days of pickup.
- Get flea/tick/heartworm prevention at that visit.
- Research pet insurance options early — it’s worth it.
••Pre-book follow-ups for vaccines and altering.
#7 Grooming
- Start early so your kitten gets used to brushing and blow-drying.
- Learn basic grooming on YouTube or schedule a professional appointment in advance.
- Use a soft slicker brush, comb, and gentle shampoo.
#8 When to Call the Vet
- Not eating: try wetting kibble or hand-feeding.
- Diarrhea: if bloody or lasting over 24 hours, contact vet.
- Sneezing: if nasal discharge appears or persists, schedule a visit.
••Biting/fear: usually stress-related — provide calm and security.
🧒 Family & Introductions
#9 Introducing Children & Other Pets
- Go slowly — patience prevents setbacks.
- Supervise young children closely; teach gentle handling.
- Introduce other animals gradually under supervision.
••Separate when you leave home until everyone is fully comfortable.
